Chapter 4: The Fox Immortal

Cultivators have a saying: Those with blocked Spiritual Meridians cannot practice Spells!

This means that people with blocked Spiritual Meridians cannot even perform the most basic accumulation of Spiritual Qi. Even if the most superior Dao method is right in front of them, they cannot Cultivate it and cannot enter the gate of Cultivation.

According to the Elders of the Yu Xian Sect: The human body has three hundred and sixty-five Spiritual Meridians. Ancient Cultivators with a naturally born Dao body had all three hundred and sixty-five Spiritual Meridians open, making it easy to Cultivate any method. Many Spells could even be achieved without Cultivation, which was called a Divine Ability.

In this era, the Heaven and Earth Spiritual Qi is turbid, far less abundant and pure than in ancient times. No one can possess a naturally born Dao body with all three hundred and sixty-five Spiritual Meridians.

The Spiritual Meridians of ordinary mortals are all blocked and cannot Cultivate. Only a very few, favored by the Heaven and Earth Spiritual Qi, are born with open Spiritual Meridians and can embark on the Dao path. Even rarer, one in a million, are those who are born with forty to fifty Spiritual Meridians. Once they begin Cultivation, they progress like a hot knife through butter, are regarded as Immortal Sprouts by major sects, and are protected with great care.

Chen Qianliu was able to receive the Talisman from Immortal Master Wuliu in his previous life and join the Yu Xian Sect in middle age because he possessed one Spiritual Meridian.

Both Immortal Master Wuliu and the Yu Xian Sect Elders had examined him and determined that he possessed an incomplete Spiritual Meridian. Immortal Master Wuliu's Cultivation was insufficient to determine what type of Spiritual Meridian he had, while the Yu Xian Sect Elders were too lazy to examine him closely, as having only one, incomplete Spiritual Meridian meant his Aptitude was extremely poor.

Knowing that he only had one, incomplete Spiritual Meridian, Chen Qianliu had been despondent for a long time, lamenting that he was not a chosen one and had Transmigrated in vain.

Later, after he got married, his old wife carefully examined him and said it was a Chun Wei Spiritual Meridian, belonging to the Jia Wood lineage. However, because it was originally incomplete, and he had diligently Cultivated the Six Harmonies Qi Refining Technique in his early years—a crude method incompatible with his Spiritual Meridian's attribute—it had damaged the Foundation of his Spiritual Meridian, making Cultivation difficult.

By then, Chen Qianliu was nearly fifty years old and had long accepted his fate. He knew his innate Aptitude was too weak. Even if he had received a superior method upon getting Started, his achievements would likely not be great. Even with a damaged Foundation, he remained unperturbed.

After a long while, Chen Qianliu felt a slight loosening in his heart, as if an invisible burden had been lifted from him. He had always worried that his Aptitude was too poor, and even with a Rebirth, he might not go far on the path of Cultivation.

Now, with a Rebirth, he achieved Qi Refining nearly thirty years earlier than in his previous life. At least… he would no longer be stuck at the Qi Refining Second Layer.

Chen Qianliu had just achieved a Breakthrough, and his True Qi was unstable. Knowing that it was not suitable to continue Qi Refining at this time, as it could easily cause his Meridians to go astray, he focused his mind for a long time. He still used his mind to replace the brush and the air to replace the yellow paper, continuing to practice the art of Talismans.

This time, drawing the Talisman was exceptionally smooth. His thoughts surged like a Dragon, his Qi flowed like a rainbow, his intention was fierce like a tiger, roaring with the wind, his execution of the Talisman was like a mighty river, ceaseless, and his conclusion was like ten thousand miles of green mountains, solemn and steady.

He opened his eyes, and an illusory character Talisman solidified in the Void Realm before him, as if substantial. This was the art of the 'Heart Talisman,' also the Foundation of Spells. In his previous life, even with Qi Refining Second Layer Cultivation, he had never succeeded in Cultivating it. He never expected that in this life, after three years of Re-Cultivation and initial Qi Refining, it would come to him as naturally as a flowing stream from a high mountain.

Chen Qianliu sighed, then laughed heartily, his emotions complex and indescribable. He flicked his sleeve, withdrawing the illusory character Talisman. Suddenly, he heard noisy sounds from the front courtyard. Curious, and unable to Cultivate with his mind in disarray, he followed the sound.

In the large courtyard in front of the Chen family house, a blackened zombie was laid out. Many villagers were gathered three deep, whispering and buzzing around the zombie. Some were surprised and excited, others were fearful and alarmed.

Chen Qianliu was also startled, thinking, "How did a zombie appear?"

He had no intention of getting closer. Zombies are evil creatures, naturally harboring a stagnant corpse Qi within their bodies. If an ordinary person is contaminated, they will at least fall seriously ill, and in severe cases, they might even die and go to Yellow Springs. Even with his Cultivation, if he inhaled a breath of corpse Qi, he would need to meditate for half a day to expel it, wasting precious Cultivation time. Such a spectacle was not worth watching.

Chen Qianliu also knew he couldn't stop them. He was too young, and his words carried little weight. Advising people not to watch such a spectacle would only lead to him being teased as a coward and making a fool of himself.

Chen Qianliu turned and left, planning to go back and draw more alarming Talismans. If anyone became poisoned, he could secretly help the villagers dispel the corpse Qi.

As he walked to the back, he suddenly felt a bit hungry. Only then did he remember that the family maid had not brought him a meal for a day.

In this world, he was the illegitimate son of the wealthiest family in Chen Family Village. His mother died young, and he was ranked sixth, hence his name Qianliu. Although he had a maid, she no longer treated him as a master and often went to his second brother's courtyard to play, sometimes not coming to see him for a day or two.

In his previous life, because Chen Qianliu fell from a building, this maid was beaten and subsequently assigned to his second brother.

He diligently studied poetry and books, gaining fame in the village and earning the reputation of a child prodigy. That maid once sent someone to inquire about returning, but Chen Qianliu flatly refused. After that, he never saw the maid again and didn't remember what became of her.

After his Rebirth, Chen Qianliu had many important matters to attend to and didn't want to quarrel with a young maid. He went to the kitchen to find something to eat.

Arriving at the kitchen, he saw servants coming and going, quite busy. Chen Qianliu couldn't help but feel curious, thinking, "The kitchen isn't usually this lively. Did guests arrive at home?"

He was, after all, a young master of the house, and no one bothered him when he entered the kitchen. He grabbed two steamed buns and a piece of steamed cured meat. He didn't return to his living quarters. As an unappreciated illegitimate son with no mother, he felt quite stifled at home, and his living space was dark and uncomfortable. He usually didn't like staying in his room, so he found a large tree, climbed it, and hid among its branches, eating the cured meat and steamed buns with great relish.

In this life, Chen Qianliu no longer planned to pursue the imperial examination path, so he didn't care about literary fame or lack thereof. Losing the aura of a child prodigy would certainly be embarrassing, but he didn't mind. Anyway, now that he had completed the first layer of Qi Refining and possessed the power to protect himself, he planned to leave home in a few days to seek out several Opportunities he had heard of in his previous life.

Chen Qianliu ate one steamed bun and was about to bite into the second when his hand loosened, and the bun disappeared. A clear voice asked, "Are you a disciple of the Spirit Gate?"

Chen Qianliu was startled and turned to look back. At some point, a little girl, about twelve or thirteen years old, had appeared on the tree. Dressed in a light yellow gown, she smiled like a flower, with exquisitely drawn features. She stood on one foot on a branch no thicker than a finger, swaying with the wind, rising and falling. In her hand was a steamed bun—wasn't it his?

He replied neither obsequiously nor arrogantly, "I am Chen Qianliu."

"Who are you? How have I never seen you before?"

The girl giggled, "I am a Fox Immortal living nearby. I saw a commotion at the Chen family and came to take a look."

She took a bite of the steamed bun, her silver teeth like shells, and her eyes curved into satisfied crescents, utterly adorable.

Chen Qianliu thought, "If I hadn't lived three lives and Cultivated Immortality in my last life, I probably would have believed you."

Most demons do not possess orthodox Mind-Cultivation Techniques and rely purely on innate talent for Cultivation. What they refine is turbid Qi, and their Demonic Qi is heavy and impure.

This girl's body was filled with Dao Qi, completely devoid of Demonic Qi. How could she be a Fox Immortal?
